Firefighters serve flapjacks for a good cause

Fire District 6 firefighters will serve short stacks for a tall cause at the Applebee's in Hazel Dell on Dec. 11.

The flapjack fundraiser benefits the ‘Community Youth Holiday Event' at Sarah J. Anderson Elementary on Dec. 15.

This event is put on by the Northeast Hazel Dell Neighborhood Association. Last year, it provided toys and food to the families of over 800 kids. For $7, people can have a pancake breakfast, meet a firefighter, tour a fire engine, and visit with Santa. A total of $5 of every ticket sold will help provide for a family in need this holiday season.

Tickets are available at Fire District 6 headquarters, 8800 NE Hazel Dell Ave., and at the door Dec. 11.

Head out to the Beer Fest at Big Al's in either Beaverton or Vancouver

Head out to the Beer Fest at Big Al's in either Beaverton or Vancouver

VANCOUVER, Wash. and BEAVERTON, Ore. -— Beer and fun will be flowing soon as Big Al’s officially announces it will host Black Friday Beer Fest at both their Vancouver and Beaverton locations from noon to 7 p.m. Nov. 25 and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 26.

The lively festival in 2010 featured Big Al’s Vancouver exclusively and was just a single day event. Due to overwhelming positive response from guests and community partners involved, Big Al’s has decided to expand the festival into a two day event at both their entertainment facilities.

Black Friday Beer Fest offers Portlanders a first taste of the new winter seasonal beers in a festival setting, while serving Vancouver as it’s one & only winter beer festival.  There will be an array of the most popular winter seasonals such as Sierra Nevada Celebration, Ninkasi Sleigher, and Alaskan Smoked Porter. As well as some hard to find local favorites carrying much more of a passionate ‘cult’ following such as Deschutes Abyss and Widmer Brrrbon.

County reduces fees for food safety inspections at restaurants

County reduces fees for food safety inspections at restaurants

VANCOUVER, Wash. -– A new fee schedule for Clark Public Health took effect last week based on recent action by the Board of Health.

Many fees have been reduced, including those charged to inspect restaurants operating from fixed locations. The changes reflect the board’s decision to increase public funding for services that benefit everyone.

However, some fees have been increased, in keeping with an ongoing effort to track and recover costs for services that benefit specific organizations or individuals.

In all, the new fees are designed to decrease expenses for some businesses and consumers, while continuing to use a fee-for-service approach to the extent it is fair and appropriate.

“We have been working to refine our fees for several years in response to statewide challenges in public health, the downturn in the economy and the preferences of local policymakers,” said Marni Storey, deputy director of Public Health. “This year’s analysis, discussion and board approval is a critical part of our plan to operate through 2012.”

Public health fees help prevent the spread of disease through food, drinking water and water recreation facilities.

Vancouver restaurant employee thwarts robbery

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A restaurant employee utilized some quick thinking Monday night in the midst of a tense situation.

At just before 6 p.m., Vancouver Police responded to a robbery call at the Subway Restaurant at 221 N.E. 104th Avenue. According to police, a man entered the restaurant, displayed a handgun and demanded money from the cashier. The cashier removed the money from the cash drawer and fled to a back room with the money in hand. The action prevented the man from being able to take anything during the robbery and he eventually fled the restaurant on a bicycle.

Vancouver Police, with the assistance of a K9 unit, canvassed the area, but they couldn't find the man.

Any person having knowledge of the identity of the suspect is encouraged to call Vancouver Police Department.

The man is described as between 30 and 40 years old, he stands between 5-10 and 6-0. He has a slender build and wore a black baseball cap with a white logo. He also had on dark sunglasses, a tan short-sleeved button up collared shirt, dark pants and was carrying a white canvas back with dark handles.

School supply drive to help needy students in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Evergreen School District Foundation will be collecting much needed school supplies for students in the Evergreen School District from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 17 in the parking lot of Chuck's Produce, 13215 SE Mill Plain Blvd., in Vancouver.

The group of volunteers has set a goal of filling two school busses with backpacks, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, glue, rulers, calculators and other school supplies. Cash donations will also be accepted and used to purchase school supplies.

Last year, the Evergreen School District Foundation, along with Evergreen Public Schools, provided school supplies to more than 275 students, enabling them to start the school year with the requisite items than they otherwise could not afford. This year, due to the economy, it is anticipated that there will be an even greater need.

Honu Hawaiian Shaved Ice will be on hand and will donate a portion of the day's sales to the drive.
